Abbreviations (US terms)
ch = chain
sc = single crochet
sl st = slip stitch
Notes
- The ch1 at the start of each round does not count as a stitch.
Base
Foundation
Start with a magic ring. You can watch a tutorial on how to do this here.
Round 1
Ch1, 6sc into ring, join with a sl st to first sc = 6sc
Round 2
Ch1, 2sc in each st around, join with a sl st to first sc = 12sc
Round 3
Ch1, 2sc in first st, sc in next st, (2sc in next st, sc in next st) 5 times, join with a sl st to first sc = 18sc
Round 4
Ch1, 2sc in first st, sc in next 2 sts (2sc in next st, sc in next 2 sts) 5 times, join with a sl st to first sc = 24sc
Round 5
Ch1, 2sc in first st, sc in next 3 sts (2sc in next st, sc in next 3 sts) 5 times, join with a sl st to first sc = 30sc
With my basket, I stopped after 5 rounds. However, if you wish to make a smaller base, feel free to complete less rounds. If you wish to make a larger base, continue with further rounds, making an additional sc each repeat (increasing by 6sc each round).
Side
Round 1
Ch1, sc in the back loop of each st around (mark the first st with a stitch marker), do not join = 30sc
Rounds 2-6
Sc in each st around (mark the first st with a stitch marker), do not join = 30sc
Eyes (make 2)
- Work as for Rnds 1-3 of Base, use D for Rnds 1-2, and F for Rnd 3. Fasten off.
Beak
- With E, ch 2.
- Row 1: 2 Sc in 2nd ch from hk, turn.
- Row 2: Ch 1, sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc, turn – 3 sc.
- Rows 3-4: Ch 1, sc in each sc across, turn.
- Row 5: Ch 1, sk 1 sc, sc in next sc, sl st in next sc. Fasten off.
You can continue the process on how big you like the base to be and how high you want the height to be for your basket.
